Most Male MPs* Feel Porky

Male politicians are having a difficult time keeping fit, according to a British poll. In a survey of MPs released recently, 70 percent of the 113 men who responded said being overweight worried them and 65 percent admitted they often ate food they thought they should not have. "Despite all the good health messages from the Department of Health, the majority of male politicians are just like most other blokes: they’re overweight, they’re tempted by unhealthy foods and they don’t exercise enough," said Peter Baker, the director of the Men’s Health Forum (MHF), an independent group which conducted the poll. 90 percent of male MPs admitted they thought they did not do enough physical activity to keep off the extra weight. Baker said although there is now increasing pressure on men to look lean, research has shown that they are getting fatter. "The proportion of men clinically overweight or obese has increased from 57 percent to 69 percent between 1993 and 2001 alone," he added in a statement.
