1)意大利谚语——“A translator is a traitor”( traduttore, traditore 翻译者即背叛者),埃科就重述了这句话;
2)英国诗歌翻译家约翰•邓汉姆爵士(John.Denham,1615-1669)的名言——“Poetry is of so subtle a spirit, that in the pouring out of one language into another, it will evaporate.”(诗具有一种微妙精神,当你把它从一种语言移入另一种语言的时候,那种精神就会完全消失。)起源于德莱顿《奥德赛》翻译序言;
3)美国诗人弗洛斯特(RobertFrost,1874~1963)的话——“Poetry is what gets lost in translation”(所谓“诗”,就是在翻译中失去的东西。)
it were as wise to cast a violet into a crucible that you might discover the formal principle of its colour and odour, as to seek to transfuse from one language into another the creations ofa poet. The plant must spring again from its seed, or it will bear no flower - and this is the burthen
of the curse of Babel。
