China's Spacecraft
To the Editor,
Re ''China Sends a Man Into Orbit, Entering the U.S.-Russian Club'' (front page, Oct. 15)
You and others translate Shenzhou, the name of the Chinese spaceship, as Divine Vessel. This is too religious.
Shen here means magical or fabulous, but not sacred. The two syllables shenzhou also form a homonym for an old-fashioned romantic term for China as the ''magical land.'' So to a Chinese ear, the name of the spacecraft feels something like ''miraculous Cathay'' does in English.
