China has made its due contribution to fighting against climate change. I — as a journalist witnessing the efforts Chinese leaders, such as Premier Wen Jiabao, had delivered at Copenhagen to save the world from a “no-deal” scenario — could not help but include in the collection the true stories of what happened last November and December ahead of another round of negotiation in Cancun. This is also the starting point for the conceptualization of this book. However, climate change is not merely a political negotiation affair. For many Chinese, especially those in ecologically fragile regions, it’s a life-or-death issue. The stories of those climate witnesses are also the shining parts of this collection.
Fu Jing is China Daily’s chief correspondent in Brussels. He covers EU institutions, Germany and France, and major international organizations involved with China. Before he took the post in July 2010, he had devoted his attention to domestic news. During previous years, Fu monitored developments related to climate change, environment and financial crisis and their impact on humans. In 2009, he reported from summits in London, New York, Pittsburgh and Copenhagen. He is editor or coeditor of several books, including Evolution of Green China (English and Chinese versions), Kick the Habit (Chinese version) and Unshakable Sichuan (English version). Fu is also the author of the Chinese government’s economic brochure 2009: Green Recovery of China’s Economy (Chinese and English versions). He has taken the lead in advocating the UNDP human reports on China in 2005, 2008 and 2010. In addition, Fu, along with his friend James Jao, co-founded the charitable organization LIVE (Low-Income Visionary Education), which aims to offer eye-opening opportunities for kids and teachers in poor rural regions.
Fu earned his master’s degree in international journalism in the City University of London after obtaining two bachelor’s degrees in 1998 and 2000, respectively from the Beijing-based Capital Normal University and China School of Journalism.
