Song of Hsiangyang
By Li Bai
Tr. Zhao Yancun
Beyond the west of Mt. Steep the sun’s sunk;
Beneath the flowers I falter down, so drunk.
Patting hands, the kids downtown do me greet,
Singing White Copper Shoes, barring the street.
When asked: who on earth are you laughing at?
They point at me, so boozed, reeling like that.
Cormorant ladle, and parrot handle!
Thirty six thousand days, a hundred years,
I drink up three hundred cups for three cheers.
Lo, in the Han River green duck heads shine;
Just like grape pulp has mellowed to be wine.
For flowing wine if the Han we could thank,
We’d build a distiller mound on the bank.
Ts'ao changed a concubine for a horse fine;
Astride it, singing Plums Fall, drunk with wine.
A kettle hung on the side of his cart,
The flutes and bands did urge him to depart.
“Yellow dog”, whined Li, the premier pent-up;
Could he match me drinking my moonlit cup?
Don’t you espy
Lord Goat in Chin’s Age had a tablet stone,
Whose turtle head did peel off, with moss strewn.
For it, my tears are kept in, not to flow;
My heart, also, will not let out its woe.
Brisk wind or the bright moon you don’t have to buy;
A mount will fall; to push you need not try.
Shuchou’s spoon you ply, Giant’s Pan you hold high,
Li Po will stay with you, to live or die.
Where is King Hsiang’s mist and rain in his dream?
The river flows east, monkeys’ shrieks downstream.
