Mencius said: “Fish is what I want, so is bear’s paw. If I cannot have both, I will pick bear’s paw instead of fish. Life is what I want, so is righteousness. If I cannot have both, I will pick righteousness instead of life. Life is what I want, but there is something dearer than life, so I will not just remain alive. Death is what I detest, but there is something worse than death, so I am not in fear of a calamity. If nothing is more important than life, what cannot be done to keep their lives? If nothing is worse than death, what cannot be done to avoid a calamity? There are methods to keep alive, but none will apply them; there are ways to avoid a calamity, but none will take them. Therefore, one may desire something better than life and one may detest something more than death. Not only sages hold such a thought; everyone does. But sages will never lose it.”
