  《巨人传》是享誉世界的经典名著,是欧洲文艺复兴时期法国著名作家拉伯雷的代表作。这是一部讽刺小说,全书共五部,故事围绕两代巨人国王——父亲卡刚杜阿、儿子庞大固埃的传奇经历而展开。书中塑造了卡刚杜阿、庞大固埃等力大无穷、知识渊博、宽宏大量、热爱和平的巨人形象,体现了作者对文艺复兴时期新兴阶级的歌颂。第一部和第二部通过叙述卡刚杜阿不同凡响的出生过程、庞大固埃巴黎求学时的奇遇、对婚姻问题的探讨等,阐明文艺复兴时期人文主义学说的种种主张;后三部以庞大固埃与巴努其等伙伴为研究婚姻难题寻访神瓶而周游列国为线索,展示了中世纪广阔的社会画面,揭露和抨击了种种社会弊端。
  该书自出版以来,先后被译成世界上几十种语言,成为文学史、思想史上影响深远的经典之作。无论作为语言学习的课本,还是作为通俗的散文读本,本书对当代中国的读者,特别是青少年都将产生积极的影响。为了使读者能够了解英文故事概况,进而提高阅读速度和阅读水平,在每章的开始部分增加了中文导读。
  弗朗西斯·拉伯雷(Francois Rabelais,约1490—1553)欧洲文艺复兴时期法国最著名的人文主义作家。
  拉伯雷出生于律师家庭,当过修士、医生、教师。他学识渊博,在自然科学和社会科学的多个领域有很深的造诣,他的研究涉及哲学、神学、医学、法律、数学、几何、天文、地理、植物、考古、音乐、绘画、民歌等。然而让拉伯雷名扬世界的是他的文学作品《巨人传》。
  1532年,《巨人传》第一部出版,一年后又出版了第二部,署名是那西埃。小说刚问世便在法国引起轰动,受到广大市民的热烈欢迎,但同时受到教会和贵族的极端仇视,之后被法院宣布为禁书。1545年,在国王的保护下,拉伯雷以真实名姓出版了《巨人传》的第三部。国王去世后,小说又被列为禁书,出版商被烧死,拉伯雷被迫外逃,直至1550年才获准回到法国。回国后,拉伯雷担任了宗教职务,业余时间为穷人治病,后又去学校教书。在学校教书期间,他完成了《巨人传》的第四部和第五部。《巨人传》揭露了中世纪罗马教皇和教会的黑暗和腐朽,反映了文艺复兴时期人文主义者对个性解放的追求。这是一部歌颂人性的人文主义伟大杰作,鞭挞了欧洲16世纪的封建社会,是新兴资产阶级对罗马教皇和教会统治发出的呐喊,作品充分体现了对民众的唤醒和激发、对人和人性的重视、对人所取得的成就的重新强调和肯定。《巨人传》是法国文学史上第一部长篇小说,是欧洲文艺复兴时期反封建神权统治的思想解放运动的代表作,是一本“充满巨人精神的奇书”。在拉伯雷的理想社会里,人性是善良的,人民是纯朴的,他的理想的行为准则就是:“你爱做什么,就做什么”。在读拉伯雷的《巨人传》时,人人可以快意地笑、爽朗地笑、尽情地笑,他因此被人们誉为“伟大的笑匠”。1553年4月9日,拉伯雷在巴黎去世,临终时他笑着说:“拉幕吧,戏做完了。”
